The Stress of Event Management

12/07/2015 by Jeff Walden

In case you didn’t already know, planning and executing events is stressful.  In fact, according to a recent post by Forbes, this career choice ranked in the top 10 most stressful jobs of 2015.  Coming in at number 8, Event Coordinators share the ranks with such stressful professions as: Airline Pilots, Military Generals, Enlisted Military Personnel, Firefighters, and Police Officers.  This probably does not surprise YOU. Making it more exciting, we are right in the middle of the busiest time of year for many event planners, the Holidays!  So, while we can’t bring January 1, 2016 any quicker, we can share some helpful tips for reducing stress:

Take Care of You First.  Yes, this is so cliché, but so true.  As the funnel for all things event related, the details are coming right through you.  However, you can help prevent becoming the bottleneck by putting “taking care of yourself” at the top of the to-do list.  The experts agree that eating a good diet, getting plenty of sleep, not skipping on exercise, and finding a stress outlet, are all good suggestions.  However, this looks different for everyone, so do what you need to do to stay sane.

Minimize the Multi-tasking. Managing details and deadlines are at the core of Event Planning. Multi-tasking becomes a way of life, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best way.  According to a blog shared by Advanced Life Skills, multitasking and frequent interruptions are sources of stress that can have a negative impact on your health and sense of well-being. The effects are far greater than robbing you of productivity and performance, making multi-tasking more than just inefficient.

Promote a Collaborative Culture. You can’t do it alone, and no one thinks you should. Creating a cooperative culture promotes collaboration.  This collaborative environment is fun, and a petri dish that feeds innovation, which we know is something you can’t have too much of in the Events business.  Not to mention, being a part of a fun, collaborative, cooperative, innovative team, will surely lower your stress levels.  Learn more about fostering a collaborative culture in your workplace, from Study.com.
